When Autographed Novels Put Bookstores in Danger

Left Coast Loonies (California lawmakers)!

Kristen Twardowski

Book Passage is a quirky little bookstore situated in the Bay Area of California. Sure, it sells books, but it also does so much more. Every year the shop hosts over 700 author events. During these events, authors often sign books, and if any signed books remain after the crowds have thinned, Book Passage sells copies in the store. Because the shop wants to keep these items accessible to everyone, they sell autographed copies for the same amount of money as the mundane editions to books.

This practice is a wonderful one, but Book Passage may soon have to stop selling autographed books all together.

Kids Who Read May Not Be Millionaires, But They Can Still Party Like Ones

Kristen Twardowski

When I was a kid, I participated in my local library’s summer reading program. Starting in June, I would fill out reading logs, each of which had room to list five books. Then I would read. For every completed log that I turned in, I earned “Book Bucks” that I could redeem for various prizes at the library. (I ended up eating a lot of free ice cream that way.) But, the pleasure of books notwithstanding, receiving food isn’t the only thing that inspires kids to read.

I found an article about one school that is experimenting with new ways to show kids how incredible books can be. The Britt David Magnet Academy in Columbus, Georgia recently celebrated the fact that its kindergarteners read a combined 1,000,000 words this school year by throwing them a “Millionaire Bash”. Like in my old summer reading program, the kids submitted logs of…

Big Guns

Ah, nothing like reminiscing!

Bob and Ellen's Great RV Adventure

Every time we re-visit someplace, we try to see something different. This past January, while in Yuma, Arizona, we decided to take a day off from running the fitness trail and drive up to the Yuma Proving Grounds, which is about twenty miles north of town.

The directions say, “Turn at the big guns.”

Next step: stop at the visitor processing center for vetting before entrance onto the proving grounds. The Army officer and staffers in the office were fascinated with Bob’s late-1960s Air Force experience and we were given our visitors’ passes after a short wait.

Serial Killer Thriller Cover Reveal!

I’m SO excited to be sharing the cover for Secrets of the Dead which is the second book in the Robyn Carter series.Little Girl Lostis book one and I loved it.

Three murders. Three innocent victims. What secrets did they share with their killer?

A bottle of bubble bath and colourful, plastic boats were scattered in small puddles on the floor. In the bathtub lay Linda Upton, fully-clothed, her lips a shade of blue, and her bloodshot eyes wide open.

When a young mother is found drowned in the bath, clutching a receipt saying ‘all debts paid’, Detective Robyn Carter knows it’s just the beginning of a harrowing case. She recognises the signs of a serial killer, and when a second victim with a receipt is found, her worst fears are confirmed.

With the local press whipping the public into a frenzy, Robyn is under pressure to…
